History[edit]

Construction of the casino at the defunct Bethlehem Steel site, with an original ore crane pictured

The property is one of five stand-alone casinos that was awarded a slots license by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board on December 20, 2006.[1] It was developed by the Las Vegas Sands corporation. The casino was slated to open in July 2008, but demolition took longer than expected due to the heavy concrete foundations of the old steel building. Its opening was delayed until the second quarter of 2009. The first concrete for the complex, which is located on the former Bethlehem Steel land on the south side of the city, was poured on November 15, 2007.

It opened on May 22, 2009. While the Las Vegas Sands owned several properties, this was the only casino in the United States to carry the Sands brand in its name, since the original Sands Hotel in Las Vegas was demolished and replaced with The Venetian, and the Sands Atlantic City was closed and demolished.

In the winter of 2009–2010, the casino was granted a license for table games which allowed the casino to expand to include 180 table games, including poker, blackjack and craps.[2] Table games began operation on July 18, 2010. The Sands Hotel opened on May 27, 2011.

It was the only property in the company to end 2014 with a profit, doing better than Sands' Vegas and Asia properties.

In November 2016, a planned expansion of the gaming floor, along with, two additional restaurants was announced.

In March 2018, it was announced that the property would be sold to Wind Creek Hospitality for $1.3 billion.[3][4] Wind Creek Hospitality had plans for a $190-million expansion to the property that would add a 300-room hotel and possibly an indoor water park.[5] The sale was completed in May 2019,[6] and the property was renamed as Wind Creek Bethlehem in July 2019.[7]

Wind Creek Event Center[edit]

The Wind Creek Event Center was designed by Howard Kulp Architects of Salisbury Township. The event center features 14,000 sq ft (1,300 m2) of flexible multipurpose space, which accommodates meetings, conventions, and a variety of entertainment events.[8][9] The venue can house 3,800 in a general admission setting and 2,500 in a reserved seating setting.[10] Operated by Live Nation Mid-Atlantic, it was opened on May 16, 2012 as the Sands Bethlehem Event Center, with a concert by Incubus.[11]Janet Jackson performed to a sold-out crowd at the venue in November 2017 for her State of the World Tour.[12]Britney Spears performed at the venue in July 2018 on her Piece of Me tour.[13]

The Las Vegas Sands Corp. websites were hacked into earlier this week, including the company’s corporate site, which led to a Nevada State Gaming Control Board investigation. Around noon on Tuesday, when web users visited the websites of Las Vegas casinos the Venetian and the Palazzo, they were shown scrolling pages of personal information lists including Social Security numbers of Sands employees, as well as their email addresses and other job-related data. By 12:45 p.m. Tuesday, the websites had been taken offline and at the time of this writing are currently unavailable, displaying messages like “Down for maintenance.”

Other affected sites included those linked to other Las Vegas Sands casinos across the world in Macau, Singapore, and Pennsylvania.

Las Vegas Sands employs more than 50,000 people all over the world, but it is believed that only the personal information of employees from Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem were breached.

Screenshots were posted (see picture) on the Morning Call, from the hacked sites before Sands took them down, of photographs of Sands CEO Sheldon Adelson, the 11th-richest man in the US with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel with a message that condemned weapons of mass destruction. Adelson, 80, who is known for his strong political influence in the US, has also made known his support for Israel and had mentioned dropping a nuclear bomb on Iran last October. The picture also shows a world map indicating cities where Sands has casinos; those casinos located in the US appeared in flames.

Not only does Adelson own existing casinos throughout the world, his empire is not done expanding. Just last year, in mid-December, he dropped plans for a $30-billion casino leisure resort in Madrid. After government officials refused to meet his demands, he walked away from the project. But it proved to be not such a bad thing for Madrid, who shortly thereafter licensed two small casinos. He now has his sights set on other places, like Japan, to invest his $30 billion. And his wallet is a seemingly bottomless pit, as his net worth rests just around $37 billion.

According to Jenny Shearer, FBI spokesperson, the FBI was aware of the hack, but would not confirm whether or not an investigation was underway and made no further comment, though Las Vegas Sands spokesperson Ron Reese did say law enforcement was working with the company to ascertain who the hacker(s) are and to what extent of damage had been done. Employees also reported that they had trouble accessing their email accounts.

Reese issued a written statement that read, “Company-operated websites have been hacked, as have some office productivity systems in the US. The company is working closely with the appropriate law enforcement agencies to determine who initiated the hacking activity.”

Sands Casino Online Political Cartoons

He added, “The company is using its IT experts to assess the damage and return the systems to full operations.”

The hackers left the following message: “Damn A, don’t let your tongue cut your throat. Encouraging the use of weapons of mass destruction, under any conditions, is a crime,” and signed their work “Anti WMD Team” and are being referred to as “hacktivits,” defined as activists who hack websites for the purpose of sending a political message.

Adelson was the single highest donator in the last presidential election, giving more than $100 million to the Republican campaign, only to prove that money can’t buy everything. His most current campaign includes efforts to ban online poker at the federal level, and he’s promised to pull out all the stops (and the funds) to accomplish his goal.

So while there is no information available yet as to who the hackers are or their motives, officials are looking into it, and meanwhile, employees are understandably worried about the security of their personal information.
